What Motivates Whistleblowers

The Whistleblower Directory is the most comprehensive database, showcasing courageous individuals from all walks of life, all of whom selflessly complied with their obligations under state and federal law by reporting fraud, waste, abuse, mismanagement, incompetence and/or crimes funded with taxpayer dollars.

A very few — as heroes, patriots, martyrs, reformers in the great sense, and men — serve the state with their consciences also, and so necessarily resist it for the most part; and they are commonly treated as enemies by it.” ~ Henry David Thoreau

Each man must for himself alone decide what is right and what is wrong, which course is patriotic and which isn’t.  You cannot shirk this and be a man.  To decide against your conviction is to be an unqualified and excusable traitor, both to yourself and to your country, let me label you as they may.”  ~Mark Twain

what we have already done.”  ~Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

The supreme quality for leadership is unquestionably integrity. Without it, no real success is possible, no matter whether it is on a section gang, a football field, in an army, or in an office.” ~Dwight D. Eisenhower

Character is doing the right thing when nobody’s looking.  There are too many people who think that the only thing that’s right is to get by, and the only thing that’s wrong is to get caught.”  ~J.C. Watts

Have the courage to say no. Have the courage to face the truth. Do the right thing because it is right. These are the magic keys to living your life with integrity.” ~W. Clement Stone

Integrity is not a conditional word. It doesn’t blow in the wind or change with the weather. It is your inner image of yourself, and if you look in there and see a man who won’t cheat, then you know he never will. Integrity is not a search for the rewards of integrity. Maybe all you ever get for it is the largest kick in the ass the world can provide. It is not supposed to be a productive asset.” ~John D. MacDonald, “The Turquoise Lament”

Better keep yourself clean and bright; you are the window through which you must see the world.”  ~George Bernard Shaw

The only ethical principle which has made science possible is that the truth shall be told all the time. If we do not penalize false statements made in error, we open up the way for false statements by intention. And a false statement of fact, made deliberately, is the most serious crime a scientist can commit.” ~ Dorothy L. Sayers, “Gaudy Night”
